Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing has no ‘definitive link’ with a foreign state. This report was published by the Canada Commission. After the investigation, they clearly deny the link between India and Nijjar killing. The report overlooks Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations.
Commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue said in the report.
“Disinformation is used as a retaliatory tactic to punish decisions that run contrary to a state’s interests,”.
The 123-page document, named Public Inquiry Into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, was published on Tuesday. It also mentioned the dismissal of six Indian diplomats. The report findings conclude Candia PM Justin Trudeau’s announcement regarding any suspect the Indian involvement in the Nijjar Killing. This was also followed by the “disinformation campaign”.
Excerpts from report
“This may have been the case with a disinformation campaign that followed the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding suspected Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar (though again no definitive link to a foreign state could be proven),”.
A few months after the killing of the Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated India’s involvement in his murder.
Nijjar was killed in British Columbia, Canada, in June 2023. India firmly rejected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations and declared that it had no role in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India’s response to PM Trudeau’s accusations
India has consistently criticized Trudeau’s administration for being lenient towards advocates of the Khalistan movement residing in Canada. The Khalistan movement is prohibited in India. Hence it receives backing from the Sikh diaspora, especially in Canada.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was murdered in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. Four Indians have been taken into custody in the case. Nonetheless, the trial is progressing at a very sluggish rate. According to IE, the case has been postponed five times since their arrest.
The ties between India and Canada faced significant tension after Prime Minister Trudeau’s claims in September of the previous year regarding the “potential” role of Indian agents in Nijjar’s assassination.
