A 5.1-magnitude earthquake originated 91 kilometers underwater in the Bay of Bengal and struck close to Kolkata. Although North Bengal and Kolkata experienced slight tremors, no damage has been reported.
Today’s earthquake: At 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Kolkata was hit by an earthquake with a Richter scale value of 5.1. The epicenter of the Kolkata earthquake was located 91 kilometers below the surface of the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Puri, Odisha.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake near Kolkata.

“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal,”
The earthquake struck the area Tuesday at 6:10 am in the Bay of Bengal, 91 kilometers below the surface, according to an NCS report. No information has been released regarding the extent of the earthquake’s damage in Odisha, Kolkata, or other areas of West Bengal.
At coordinates Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, the epicentre of the Kolkata earthquake was situated in the Bay of Bengal.
A seismological officer stated that since the epicentre of today’s earthquake was 91 kilometers below the surface, there was a lower likelihood of damage.
More damage is caused by shallow earthquakes that originate five or ten kilometers below the surface than by ones that originate far below.
On January 8, when a strong earthquake struck a remote area of Tibet and parts of Nepal, people in Kolkata also felt moderate tremors. North Bengal experienced earthquake shocks, but no damage had been reported.
