On February 27, at 2:25 am, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake occurred near the Morigaon district of Assam. The National Center for Seismology reports that the seismic activity took place 16 kilometers below the surface.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reports that early Thursday morning, an earthquake with a Richter scale magnitude of five occurred in the Morigaon district of Assam. The earthquake struck at a depth of 16 kilometers at 2:25 am, according to NCS.
The NCS stated on X
“EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam,”.
Residents were surprised by the abrupt tremors, and several hurried out of their houses at midnight.
Social media shows deep reactions to the tremors as one user stated, “Did you feel?” Another user also remarked, “Made me wake up , such was the shock and at this time of night it’s damn scary.” A third user also said, “It felt mush stronger than 5 here in Arunachal[sic].” A fourth user also replied, “Hope people are safe in Assam.”
A fifth user also said, “yea, this was long!” A sixth user stated, “It was very strong.” A seventh user also added, “Guwahati was freaking shaking at 2:25 am.”
In the early hours of Tuesday, the Bay of Bengal was hit by an earthquake with a Richter scale value of 5.1. The earthquake struck at 6:10 am at a depth of 91 km, according to NCS.
The NCS stated on X
“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal,”.
According to a representative of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the tremor was also detected at latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E, as reported by PTI.
However, a top official from the Odisha Revenue Department stated that no casualties or property losses were reported. He added that because the Bay of Bengal was the epicenter of the earthquake, its effects were “negligible.” He added that the jolt was felt in a few other Odisha locations, including Paradip, Puri, and Berhampur.
