Many public employees were aware that their employment could be at risk when President-elect Donald Trump declared that Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk would suggest significant cuts to the federal government in his administration.
They now fear becoming the personal targets of the richest man in the world and his hordes of admirers.
Musk shared two X postings last week that listed the names and titles of four relatively unknown climate-related government positions, among the chaos of his daily letters. Tens of millions of people have seen each post, and the people mentioned have received a flurry of criticism. Of the four women listed, at least one has removed her social media profiles.
These posts target otherwise unknown government personnel in roles that do not directly deal with the public, even if the information he provided on those positions is accessible through public web databases.
As Musk turns bureaucrats in the background into personal targets, a number of existing federal officials told CNN they fear their lives would be permanently altered, even to the point of being physically attacked. Others told CNN that the possibility of being targeted by Musk could force them to quit their jobs completely, allowing him to accomplish his smaller government objectives without even a thorough review.
According to Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents over 800,000 of the 2.3 million civilian federal employees,
“These tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees.”
“It’s intended to make them fearful that they will become afraid to speak up.”
