As opposition MPs joined the latest protest against the levy, which is scheduled to begin next year, the words “War on farmers” were displayed on one of the Union Jack flags flying in the wind.

In an attempt to pressure the Labour administration to revoke a proposed farm tax that they claim will be extremely costly, hundreds of UK farmers with tractors blocked the streets surrounding parliament on Monday.

As opposition MPs joined the latest protest against the levy, which is scheduled to begin next year, the words “War on farmers” were displayed on one of the Union Jack flags flying in the wind.

Recently, the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that some farms will no longer be exempt from inheritance tax, a long-standing policy intended to help facilitate the family handover of farms.

“We’d have to sell the farm, we’re not making enough money to continue and pay succession tax,”

According to 21-year-old Toby Cawston, if the government doesn’t change its mind, he will sell his 2,200-acre (890-hectare) farm in Suffolk, eastern England.

“It’s unlikely that they listen to us, unfortunately,” he also told to AFP.

The exemption will be limited to £1 million ($1.2 million) as of April 2026. After that, a 20 percent tax, which is half the standard rate, will be applied.

The administration maintains that only the 500 biggest properties and opportunists who purchased land to evade taxes will be impacted by the tax.

A spokesperson for Starmer stated on Monday that the company just pledged £5 billion to fund and said

“This government’s commitment to farmers is steadfast,”

“their vital role in delivering food security to people around the UK”.

However, farmers are disappointed, and Nigel Farage, the leader of the hard-right Reform UK party, expressed optimism on Monday that the protests will force the government to change its mind.

“I’m pleased to see the campaign is ramping up, it’s growing right across the country,”

He made this statement prior to joining the protest, which saw tractors pass Parliament and near Starmer’s home on Downing Street.

Farage urged peaceful protests that would go to help farmers “get change”.

According to government statistics, only 41% of UK farms earned more than £50,000 in 2023, while 17% of farms generated no profit at all.

However, when it comes to the proposed tax, the value of the land and other agricultural assets is what counts.

Vanessa Hartley said while attending Monday’s rally.

“My brother has three kids and they only aspire at being farmers, they don’t want to be millionaires but they want to keep the (family) farm,”.

She maintained that the farms would eventually be purchased by “millionaires” who had no interest in growing food.

UK farmers are being severely impacted, as is the case in many other nations, by growing energy costs, environmental restrictions, and pressure on prices from the food sector and big-box stores.

Farmers claim that unfair competition has resulted from new bilateral trade deals following Brexit and that Britain’s exit from the European Union has further affected agricultural exports and the hiring of seasonal workers.
