The mild-intensity earthquake followed another earthquake that hit Myanmar earlier over the intervening night of Thursday.
The earthquake in Uttarkashi happened at a depth of 5 km, at latitude 30.85 N and longitude 78.60 E.
National Center for Seismology said on X
“EQ of M: 3.5, On: 24/01/2025 08:19:28 IST, Lat: 30.85 N, Long: 78.60 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand,”. No loss of life or property has been reported so far.
The update on the Myanmar earthquake according to the NCS is, “EQ of M: 4.8, On: 24/01/2025 00:53:35 IST, Lat: 24.68 N, Long: 94.87 E, Depth: 106 Km, Location: Myanmar.”
Uttarakhand demographical location is prone to natural disasters like cloud bursts, flooding, landslides, etc.
There is also a possibility of land subsidence in several of its sections. The 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake caused significant damage to the geologically delicate area. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake resulted in significant destruction and fatalities.
A few years later, in 1999, a high-intensity earthquake occurred in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Significant damage was also caused by the natural disaster. Alarms were also raised by the 2017 Rudraprayag earthquake, which had a Richter scale value of 5.1.
Uttarakhand is more prone to massive destruction due to earthquakes. There are many geographical factors behind it like unchecked construction and dense populations in prime cities like Nainital, Mussoorie, and Dehradun.
The unplanned constructions and the deforestation aggravated the situation. Many regions of the state continue to witness mild tremors of earthquakes due to the area’s seismic sensitivity.
