At least 30 people were killed when a bus in Guatemala City went off a highway bridge into a contaminated ravine on Monday, trapping survivors, according to a fire department official.
The bus fell about 20 meters from Puente Belice, a highway bridge that spans a road and creek, as it was on a popular route into and out of the city.
The bus was partially buried in wastewater, with the remains of the victims surrounding it, according to photos the fire department posted on social media.
Mayor Ricardo Quinonez of Guatemala City said on social media that emergency personnel had been sent in while traffic cops set up detours in the impacted region.
President Bernardo Arevalo of Guatemala sent the army and disaster agency to support response efforts and proclaimed three days of national mourning.
Arevalo stated on social media
“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up to heartbreaking news. Their pain is my pain,”.
