The US Geological Survey stated that an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred Wednesday morning close to Modisi, Indonesia.
According to the US Geological Survey website, an earthquake struck with a magnitude of 6.1 close to Modisi, Indonesia on Wednesday AM local time. Residents were forced to evacuate outside due to the earthquake. However, there have been no reports of any damage or injuries.
The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers and was located 44 kilometers from Modisi. With a lesser magnitude of 6.0, the nation’s meteorological bureau declared that there was no chance of a tsunami.
‘It was strong’
Gita Waloni, a 25-year-old guest from a hotel in North Minahasa district in the province told AFP,
“I had just woken up when I realised it was an earthquake. It was strong, swaying from side to side. Objects inside my rooms rattled. I decided to get out. I was so scared there would be an aftershock while I was inside the lift. All other guests had also fled.”
An earthquake with magnitude 6.2 rocked Sulawesi in January 2021 killed over 100 people and left thousands homeless. On the other side a magnitude-7.5 earthquake and ensuing tsunami in Palu, Sulawesi, in 2018 claimed over 2,200 lives.
Additionally, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake that occurred in Aceh province in 2004 killed over 170,000 Indonesians due to a tsunami.

The epicenter of the Kolkata earthquake was located 91 kilometers below the surface of the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Puri, Odisha. Early in the morning on February 17, an earthquake with a Richter scale magnitude of 4.0 struck the nation’s capital, Delhi. Because the city was the epicenter, residents in the national capital experienced larger shocks even though the earthquake near Kolkata was of higher intensity.
