In a narrow 52-48 vote, the Senate confirmed Tulsi Gabbard, the candidate nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Before the vote, Trump’s selection of Gabbard to lead intelligence was questioned harshly because she had no prior experience leading a federal agency or working as a spy. Additionally, she has previously stated her support for certain “anti-American” individuals, such as Russia, Syria, and Edward Snowden.
Former Hawaii Representative Gabbard brings to the position both military and parliamentary experience. She has received recognition for her service in the Hawaii Army National Guard, which included deployments to Iraq and Kuwait, and her tenure in the US House of Representatives from 2013 to 2021.
