Manipur Tragedy: A CRPF jawan in Lamsang, Imphal West District, fatally shot three of his comrades at their camp before ending his own life

This gruesome incident took place at around 8 pm, Manipur Police stated.

Officials stated that Havildar Sanjay Kumar, the alleged assailant, is said to have opened fire during a routine exchange with his colleagues. The attack resulted in the immediate deaths of a constable and a sub-inspector, while eight others were injured during the ensuing commotion.

Initial reports suggest that the attack originated from a personal conflict.

The injured individuals received prompt medical attention and were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Manipur Police stated on X.

“In an unfortunate incident, tonight at around 8 pm, a suspected case of fratricide happened inside a CRPF camp in Lamsang under Imphal West District wherein one CRPF jawan opened fire killing 02 (two) of his own CRPF colleagues on the spot and injuring 08 (eight) others. Later, he also committed suicide by using service weapon. The personnel belonged to F-120 Coy CRPF. Senior officers of Police and CRPF have rushed to the spot.” 

This incident occurred against the backdrop of persistent ethnic violence in Manipur, which has been ongoing since May 2023. The state has experienced substantial turmoil between the Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo tribes, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread displacements.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced through an official note on Thursday that President’s rule had been implemented in Manipur. The decision was announced a few days after BJP leader Biren Singh stepped down as chief minister.

The CRPF has extended its condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and is currently carrying out an internal inquiry into the circumstances of this tragic incident. Officials are also anticipated to examine.
