Unexpectedly, the IRS plans to fire hundreds of workers at the height of tax season. This choice sparks discussion about government efficiency and resource allocation under Trump and Musk’s leadership by casting doubt on the agency’s capacity to handle returns and audits.
According to news agency Reuters, which cited people familiar with the situation, President Donald Trump has ordered the firing of thousands of US Internal Revenue Service employees in the coming days as Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) starts its audit of “inefficient” federal employees.
The action could burden the resources of the tax-collecting agency during the critical tax filing season.
Officials from the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees government hiring, directed all agencies to remove probationary employees on Thursday, citing the lack of full employment protections for the newer workers.
According to the Reuters story, it’s unclear how many thousands of IRS employees would be released.
Approximately 16,000 probationary employees were among the approximately 1,000,000 employees of the US IRS who were hired during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
Biden aimed to strengthen the agency’s functions, such as its capacity to audit big businesses and high-income taxpayers.
Months after the deadline, the IRS is still very busy processing returns and giving taxpayers their money back.
According to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to Reuters, the layoffs will target any probationary staff who did not resign under a now-closed buyout scheme. Who has not been determined to be necessary to get through tax season, which is already underway ahead of the April 15 deadline for submitting federal returns?
The New York Times was the first to report on the IRS layoffs, which are part of a larger attempt by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to restructure the federal government. They claim is too big, ineffective, and full of fraud and waste.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by the IRS.
The person told to Routers
“They are trying to reduce numbers across the board with no analysis to the impact it will have on operations,”.
